01.04.19 – National Minimum Wage Increases
There has been an increase in the National Minimum Wage in the UK that came into effect from 1st April 2019, these changes are as follows:
NMW for 25+ has increased to £8.21 (an increase of 38p)
NMW for 21 – 24 year olds has increased to £7.70 (an increase of 32p)
NMW for 18 – 20 year olds has increase to £6.15 (an increase of 25p)
NMW for under 18 year olds has increased to £4.35 (an increase of 15p)
NMW for an apprentice has increased to £3.90 (an increase of 20p)
These are the minimum hourly rates that any business in the UK is required to pay their employees. Please note that the new rates come in from the start of the next pay period following the 1st April, for example a period of 19th Mar to 18th Apr will be paid at the current rates and from 19th Apr the new rates are applied.
01.04.18 – National Minimum Wage Increases
There has been an increase in the National Minimum Wage in the UK that came into effect from 1st April 2018, these changes are as follows:
NMW for adults has increased to £7.83 (an increase of 33p)
NMW for 21 – 24 year olds has increased to £7.38 (an increase of 33p)
NMW for 18 – 20 year olds has increase to £5.90 (an increase of 30p)
NMW for under 18 year olds has increased to £4.20 (an increase of 15p)
NMW for an apprentice has increased to £3.70 (an increase of 20p)

01.04.2017 National Minimum Wage Increases
The following rates will come into effect on 1 April 2017:
NMW for adults increases to £7.05/hour (a 10p increase)
NMW for 18-20 year olds increases to £5.60/hour (a 5p increase)
NMW for 16-17 year olds increases to £4.05/hour (an 5p increase)
NMW for apprentices* increases to £3.50/hour (a 10p increase)
Please note that the new rates come in from the start of the next pay period following the 1st April, for example a period of 19th Mar to 18th Apr will be paid at the current rates and from 19th Apr the new rates are applied.
01.10.2016 National Minimum Wage Increases
The following rates will come into effect on 1 October 2016:
NMW for adults increases to £6.95/hour (a 25p increase)
NMW for 18-20 year olds increases to £5.55/hour (a 25p increase)
NMW for 16-17 year olds increases to £4.00/hour (an 13p increase)
NMW for apprentices* increases to £3.40/hour (a 10p increase)
Please note that the new rates come in from the start of the next pay period following the 1st October, for example a period of 19th Sep to 18th Oct will be paid at the current rates and from 19th Oct the new rates are applied.
06.04.16 Student Loan
From 6th April 2016 there are 2 types of student loans which can be repaid through payroll, therefore new employees must declare which type of student loan they are repaying. 31.01.16 Holiday Pay
In the recent case Lock v British Gas Trading Ltd the Employment Appeal Tibunal ruled that an employee is entitled to holiday pay that includes commission that would normally be earned when working. A failure not to include commission could be deemed as an unlawful deduction from wages.
20.01.16 Changes to benefits in Kind
From April 2016 benefits in kind that were usually reported on P11ds can now be payrolled, this is only voluntary and P11ds can still be used.
30.09.15 National Minimum Wage
The following rates will come into effect on 1 October 2015:
NMW for adults increases to £6.70/hour (a 20p/3% increase)
NMW for 18-20 year olds increases to £5.30/hour (a 17p/3% increase)
NMW for 16-17 year olds increases to £3.87/hour (an 8p/2% increase)
NMW for apprentices* increases to £3.30/hour (a 57p/20% increase)
